Graduate Students
Mary Bandu
I joined the Desaire group from an industrial manufacturer of microbiological products and media, where I was a Formulations Technologist. I received my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Houston . My research focuses on small molecule fragmentation using collision-induced dissociation in a quadrapole ion trap mass spectrometer.
Dilusha Dalpathado
My name is Dilusha Dalpathado and I am from Sri Lanka. I play tennis, watch movies, or listen to music during my spare time. My research interests are focused on characterizing glycopeptides and glycans by mass spectrometry. A good understanding of what the biologically important glycans look like and how they are presented to their receptors may provide opportunities for the therapeutic treatments of diseases.
Janet
My name is Janet. My research is focused on developing methods to characterize glycoproteins. This research will allow us to better understand the structure of human glycoproteins involved in reproduction and metabolism. I enjoy watching movies, reading, listening to music, traveling, and interacting with people during my leisure time.
Ying Zhang
My name is Ying Zhang. I come from China. I am interested in reading books, listening to music, watching TV, and traveling. My research is development of mass spectrometric methods to differentiate between phosphorylated compounds and sulfated compounds by using ion-pairing reagents. This is really cool research because it helps to identify two important functional groups in biological systems.
Melinda Toumi
In 2003, 2004, and 2005, Melinda contributed her knowledge, hard work, and positive attitude to the Desaire Research Team as an undergraduate researcher. Melinda graduated in May 2005, when she was also bestowed the American Institute of Chemists Award. Melinda is now attending KU as a graduate student in Chemistry.
Katie Watkins
Katie joined the Desaire Research Team as a summer research student in 2003 and 2005. Her research spanned both the Pharmaceutical Analysis and Glycoprotein Analysis projects in the lab, and her work was presented at the regional ACS meeting in 2003.
