Dr. Heather Desaire

Professor Heather Desaire

Hi, I’m Heather Desaire. I was born in Kansas, and I have lived in several other interesting places, including California, Ohio, Iowa, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Missouri, and England. I enjoy traveling and dining out at Lawrence's great restaurants. I am also an avid sports fan, especially when the Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, and Kansas University Jayhawks are playing. Though I complain a lot about having to move my car whenever there’s a basketball game, to be honest, I like the fact that KU has an excellent basketball team.

Dr. Eden Go

Research Associate, Dr. Eden Go, joined the Desaire Research team in February of 2005 after a tenure at Scripps Research Institue in San Diego, CA. Eden is currently working on the lab's research in Glycoprotein Analysis and serving as a mentor for the graduate students.

Graduate Students

I joined the Desaire group from an industrial manufacturer of microbiological products and media, where I was a Formulations Technologist. I received my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Houston . My research focuses on small molecule fragmentation using collision-induced dissociation in a quadrapole ion trap mass spectrometer.

My name is Dilusha Dalpathado and I am from Sri Lanka. I play tennis, watch movies, or listen to music during my spare time. My research interests are focused on characterizing glycopeptides and glycans by mass spectrometry. A good understanding of what the biologically important glycans look like and how they are presented to their receptors may provide opportunities for the therapeutic treatments of diseases.

My name is Janet. My research is focused on developing methods to characterize glycoproteins. This research will allow us to better understand the structure of human glycoproteins involved in reproduction and metabolism. I enjoy watching movies, reading, listening to music, traveling, and interacting with people during my leisure time.

I am Lin Yi. I come from China. My favorite activities in my spare time are singing Karaoke, watching movies, and playing badminton. My research focuses on the identification of characteristic functional groups in drug metabolites by using ESI-MS/MS. Now I have two projects: One is to detect the opening of a lactone ring when drugs are metabolized under physiological conditions; the other is to identify sulfates and sulfonates in drug metabolites.

My name is Ying Zhang. I come from China. I am interested in reading books, listening to music, watching TV, and traveling. My research is development of mass spectrometric methods to differentiate between phosphorylated compounds and sulfated compounds by using ion-pairing reagents. This is really cool research because it helps to identify two important functional groups in biological systems.

Undergraduate Students

Joe Dratter has been working with the Desaire Research Team since August, 2004. Joe's research project focuses on studying sulfated metabolites. This year, Joe won a KU award for outstanding achievement in Analytical Chemistry. His future plans include Pharmacy School.

Melinda BretthauerMelinda Toumi

Since January, 2003, Melinda Toumi has contributed her knowledge, hard work, and positive attitude to the Desaire Research Team. Graduating this May, she was recently bestowed the American Institute of Chemists Award. Melinda plans to attend graduate school in Chemistry at KU this fall.
